Communities across Minnesota remember war with tributes and memorials, but the stories they tell do not always resonate with students. How can educators create opportunities to engage students with the history and memory of war? And how can visits to war memorials connect students to the lived experiences of Veterans past and present?
Join other secondary-level educators in a daylong workshop that explores how Americans memorialize war and military service in public and how war gets remembered through the personal stories of Veterans. The day will include learning from and with Veterans through discussion, hands-on activities with artifacts from the Minnesota Historical Society collection and a facilitated tour of war memorials at the Minnesota State Capitol Mall. Participants will leave with resources and ideas to enhance student visits to the Capitol grounds and generate discussion around war and memory.
This workshop is co-presented by the Minnesota Humanities Center and the Minnesota Historical Society thanks to generous funding from the Minnesota Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund.
