OPS — Increase Student Engagement Through Absent Narratives

Time spent in this foundational course marks the beginning of your professional and personal transformation. You learn to forge meaningful bonds with students, which ultimately ramps up their engagement and curiosity. You discover how unconscious assumptions carried into the classroom can hinder a full appreciation of students’ lives.

As colleagues exchange insights with each other via personal examples, exercises, conversations, and guided reflections, you all learn how to uncover students’ stories and treat them with more respect and empathy. Between sessions, you’ll apply new “action research” skills. Everyone works together on community solutions for change — bringing the learning fullcircle. You begin to look for the best in those around you, and draw upon your own experiences for insight. Along the way, you create deeper head-and-heart-centered relationships with students, their families, and colleagues. The yield? More engaged, enthusiastic and confident students, and increasingly optimistic, encouraged educators. Your filter has changed — embracing absent narratives transforms your view of life, work, curriculum and community. It is a powerhouse of growth and possibilities.
