The Minnesota Humanities Center (MHC) staff, grant recipients, and many partner organizations would like to thank Dr. Shelly Lowe, outgoing Chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), for her dedication and leadership.
Since 2021, Dr. Lowe has led NEH in the administration of over $6 billion in grants to colleges, universities, libraries, radio stations, historic sites, research institutions, and other organizations around the country. A member of the Navajo Nation, Dr. Lowe is the first Indigenous American to lead NEH.
MHC is one of 56 federally recognized humanities councils and the recipient of many NEH grants; we are committed to continuing our work here, throughout Minnesota. That work – which serves and strengthens our country and our state – helps people understand themselves, others, and the world around them by focusing on the humanities: literature, history, philosophy, art, religion, and language. We gather to share stories as individuals and communities, we listen and hear, we ask questions, make connections, and we see each other in an authentic way. The humanities help us understand and interpret our human experience.
“This isn’t a time to live in fear, to close ourselves off to the world. This is a time to be brave. To ask questions, seek answers, and build the world you want, the world you’ve always wanted.”
– Dr. Shelly C. Lowe, 2024 National Humanities Conference Address
We wish Dr. Shelly Lowe the very best.
Sincerely,
Kevin Lindsey
