Part Time Banquet Chef (Evenings and Weekends)

The Minnesota Humanities Event Center is a full service facility with 3 main multipurpose event spaces, breakout spaces, 15 overnight guest rooms, and onsite catering. The Event Center is seeking an On-Call Banquet Chef to work evenings and weekends and will report to the Kitchen Manager. This position will also oversee and direct the Dishwasher and Kitchen Assistant and other kitchen wait staff on duty.

Salary: Dependent upon qualifications and experience, $16-$20 per hour
Location: St. Paul
Hours: Part Time, Evenings and Weekends

Food Knowledge: must be experienced with various cooking methods, including braising, charbroiling, sauté, and par-cooking to prepare recipes on determined menus. Recipes include: meat, poultry, entrees, sauces, soups, salads, vegetables, breads, desserts, hors d’oeuvres, and garnishes. Recognize and follow quality standards in regard to meats, vegetables, fruits, dairy products and grains, including proper storage of these items according to health standards. Convert and adapt recipes for quantity and portion control. An understanding of seasonings for a range of culturally diverse foods is helpful, as is knowledge of common food allergens and their substitutes. Health and Safety Standards: must consistently practice safe food handling techniques and maintain a sanitary service area.


High school diploma or equivalent and several years of experience in the food industry, food production and some supervision of kitchen staff is preferred. Culinary school students are encouraged to apply if they have adequate experience. Key competencies include: customer service and strong communication skills, team player, adaptability, enthusiasm, and dependability.


The shifts are scheduled based on Event Center bookings so shifts and hours will vary week to week. All shifts will be on evenings and weekends with some daytime shifts when regular chef is on vacation. During the week shifts will be 3:00-8:00 p.m. and weekends typically 7:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. or 3:00-8:00 p.m.
