Cannon River Nibi Walk Orientation
Sunday, Jun 30 | 1:00 pm–4:00 pm
Join the Minnesota Humanities Center and its “We Are Water MN” partners, Cannon River Watershed Partnership in learning more from the Cannon River. The Nibi Walk program of the Indigenous People’s Task Force, led by Sharon Day, will lead us in a Nibi walk: an Indigenous-led, extended ceremony to pray for the water. Every step is taken in prayer and gratitude for water, our life giving force. The walk begins at the headwaters, Waterville, MN, and will wind through to the mouth of the river at Red Wing, MN.
This event has two parts: on Sunday, June 30 from 1:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m., walkers will learn more about the Dakota history of the river, the ecological impacts of and to the river, and about the Nibi Walk protocols; the actual walk will begin on Friday, July 12 and end on Monday, July 15 . In order to participate in the walk on July 12, it is necessary to participate in the orientation on June 30.
Nibi Walk Orientation: Sunday, June 30 from: 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. at the Weitz Center for Creativity at Carleton College in Northfield, MN.
Nibi Walk: Friday, July 12 – Monday July 15 beginning in Waterville, MN and walking along the river and ending at Red Wing, MN.
