St. Paul – African American History Tour in South Minneapolis

$75Join us on a captivating journey through Minneapolis’s South quadrant, making visible the aspirations of African Americans in Minnesota and historical narratives often overlooked in traditional education. Perfect for educators seeking to enrich their curriculum and empower students with diverse perspectives, this tour promises to be a transformative educational experience!
This tour will start and end at the Minnesota Humanities Center and will cover history from 1840-1980, from the arrival of Dred Scott and Dr. Emerson at Fort Snelling to a bus tour of historic African American landmarks, followed by a presentation of African American culture, music, and history at Sabathani Community Center.
This tour will be led by expert educators Judge LaJune Lange and Shonice Pooniwala of LTL International Leadership Institute and will feature:
- Daniel Bergin, Documentary Filmmaker and Executive Producer, Twin Cities PBS
- Bill Convery, Director of Research, Minnesota Historical Society
- Harry Davis Jr., son of American civil rights activist, civic leader, and businessman W. Harry Davis
- Gary Hines, Music Director and Producer, Sounds of Blackness
- Anthony R. Scott, co-editor of Minnesota’s Black Community in the 21st Century
- Tracy Williams-Dillard, CEO/publisher, Minnesota Spokesman Recorder

This tour is available at no cost for the Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) school community through generous support from the Minneapolis Foundation and Minneapolis Public Schools. Enter discount code MPS2024 when registering. MPS educators will receive out-of-school-time pay for their participation.
